Driver Lets A Police Van Through A Red Light And Gets Fined

We all know that if an emergency vehicles comes up behind you when driving, you should try and let it through. If you don’t let the vehicle through, you could be stopping the services from saving lives.

The majority of situations, you are driving along the road as an emergency vehicles comes up behind you and it’s fairly easy to get out the way. However, where do you move if you’re sitting at a red light? This was the decision that had to be made by Philip Lilley while he was waiting at a red light.

The two cars ahead of him, one on the left hand lane and one directly ahead of his car had already moved out into the junction to make way. Now the decision was down to Mr Lilley, either choose to move over the white line into the junction, or just sit there and block the emergency vehicle’s path.

With only a few seconds to make up his mind, he choose to move out and give some passing space. However, even though he let the emergency vehicle pass through the lights, Mr Lilley still received 3 points on his licence and a fine for jumping lights. You could question it by saying he didn’t jump the lights because only around a yard of his car was over the line.

The Driving Standards Agency said to Mr Lilley that rule 219 of the Highway Code is ‘motorists should consider oncoming emergency vehicles but comply with traffic signs’. However, Mr Lilley now thinks the same as I do. If people are going to be worried about getting fined and having points on their licence, a large number of people won’t move out of the way for these vehicles, this could result in lost lives.

So if you were in that situation, would you still move out into the junction to let an emergency vehicle through if you knew you were going to get a fine? Mr Lilley always would have done without thinking about it, not so much now though.
